Park City Mountain

Park City, Utah (September 20, 2007) – Park City Mountain Resort announced its terrain parks were awarded “Terrain Park(s) of the Year” by the readers of Transworld Snowboarding magazine for the fourth year in a row.

“It is an unbelievable honor to have our four terrain parks recognized as the best for the fourth year in a row, but we aren’t resting on our success,” said Jim Mangan, director of action sports marketing for Park City Mountain Resort. “We’re going to step it up this season with some new features that have never been seen before.”

“Last season, Park City Mountain Resort transformed its four terrain parks – PayDay, Pick N’ Shovel, King’s Crown and Joney’s – by switching locations on the mountain and adding new features. The terrain parks included a total of 30 jump features and 60 jib features, with more features to be added in the 2007-08 season. Park City Mountain Resort is also home to the Eagle Superpipe, one of the largest superpipes in North America and the site of the World Superpipe Championships for the last five years.

“”Park City Mountain has once again lived up to its name and to our reader’s high expectations, ranking in as the number one park in the 2008 Resort Poll,” said Annie Fast, senior editor for Transworld Snowboarding magazine. “After three consecutive seasons at the top, Park City hasn’t been resting on its laurels – the killer parks for all ability levels are constantly evolving and enjoying the highest level of maintenance and an electrified snowboard scene. It all comes together to make Park City an impossible freestyle resort to beat year after year.”

“Professional snowboarders and skiers, such as Shaun White, Tanner Hall, Erin Comstock, Pep Fujas, Aaron Biittner, Mark Frank Montoya and Ashley Battersby are often seen skiing and riding in Park City Mountain Resort’s terrain parks and superpipe. Many of these athletes will appear in Park City Mountain Resort’s upcoming ski and snowboard movie, “I Ride Park City,” which is filmed entirely at Park City Mountain Resort and will debut in fall 2008.

“”I Ride Park City” follows in the success of its movie predecessor, “City. Park City.,” which was the first 16 mm snowboard movie to feature only one resort (Park City Mountain Resort) and was nominated in two categories at the 2007 X-DANCE Film Festival. Both movies are directed by Park City Mountain Resort’s Director of Action Sports Marketing, Jim Mangan, who designs and implements the award-winning terrain parks.

iSlide: Segway meets skateboard in radical urban transport concept

leave a comment »

Look what I came across at GizMag.com … looks super interesting!

iSlide on Gizmag.com Proto

These days the term skateboard tends to refer to a whole raft of different transport modes that go way beyond the two-axle, four wheeled conveyances that rose to prominence in the 1970s – everything from in-line caster boards to spokeless mini-motorcycles and sit-down street machines tend to be categorized under the genre. Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the ramp, a new concept has emerged that could see self-balancing technology and electric propulsion incorporated into the skateboard design. The iSlide concept by industrial designer Ofir Tal is a one wheel motorized board that utilizes a hydrogen fuel cell and onboard gyroscope to attain speeds of around 15 kph.

Described as a mix of snowboarding and skateboarding, the iSlide’s motion is controlled by leaning forwards (to accelerate) and backwards (to slow down). Read the rest of this entry »

Snowboarding is fun!

Ski resorts to unveil new features!! I am so stoked!

A new lift, terrain park improvements, early rides on powder days and a variety of environmental initiatives are among the new features snow sport enthusiasts can expect from the three South Shore ski resorts this winter. Heavenly Mountain Resort anticipates one of the first major projects from its recently approved master plan amendment, the replacement of its two-person Olympic Chair with a high-speed quad, to be complete by Dec. 7, according to a press statement. The new chair will shave approximately 7 1/2 minutes off the ride time and provide skiers and snowboarders access to three new trails in the resort’s North Bowl.

On selected powder days at Sierra at Tahoe this winter, season passholders will have the opportunity to head onto the mountain 30 minutes earlier than the scheduled opening time. Read the rest of this entry »

surfer rescues dog

Surfer Saves Pooch Swept From Pier

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. — A surfer rode a wave on his stomach to rescue a struggling dog that had been swept off a pier and into Lake Michigan by a wave.

Matt Smolenski, 25, said he grabbed the pooch’s collar just as the exhausted, black-and-brown mixed breed stopped dog-paddling on Tuesday.

“He put the dog up on his surfboard, and the dog rode the surfboard in to shore,” said Royce Rodgers, an off-duty Muskegon Heights police officer who witnessed the rescue. As the dog crouched on the board, Smolenski held on from the water, fighting large waves and a strong current all the way to shore.

“I’ve watched the dog about a million times,” said Smolenski, of Grand Haven. “He barks at the waves and then jumps back when they wash up on the pier.”

A surfing buddy, Joe Riopelle, 24, also of Grand Haven, helped pull in the duo.

Rodgers, who had started walking his own dog on the pier but turned back around after seeing the size of the waves, said the other dog wasn’t on a leash when the wave swept it over the side. The same wave knocked the animal’s owner off his feet, Rodgers said.

“The dog was trying to swim, but the waves were very large. It was struggling,” Rodgers said. “The owner was screaming for the dog.”

Rodgers said the owner thanked Smolenski and gave him a high five. He then “left so fast, I couldn’t get his name,” he said.

Boarding House Mentors to Present “Pass the Stoke” Award to PacSun

leave a comment »

Boarding House Mentors (BHM), the non-profit organization that brings the “stoke” of surfing, snowboarding and soon, skateboarding, to at-risk and underserved youth, has chosen specialty retailer PacSun as its annual “Pass The Stoke” award recipient for its outstanding support of the organization. The award will be presented to PacSun’s Director of Action Sports Marketing, Tracy Cioffi and PacSun’s Director of E-Commerce, Stacy Clark at the Action Sports Retailer Trade Show in San Diego this weekend.

“We are thankful for PacSun’s enthusiastic support of our action sports programs for at-risk youth. The company’s sponsorship of our ‘Pass The Stoke’ t-shirt line, a joint venture with O’Neill, has provided us with much-needed funding so that we may continue to operate our youth programs,” shared BHM’s Executive Director Grace Kastenberg.

“PacSun is proud be a part of ‘Pass the Stoke,’ which allowed us to combine our passion for fashion and board sports with a truly deserving cause,” said Cioffi.  We are honored to be recognized by Boarding House Mentors with this award and hope that our company’s involvement generates even more support and awareness for the organization.”

More than teaching kids about board sports, BHM, now in its 5th season, creates a unique, safe and healthy community environment where at-risk youth make new friends, encourage each other and learn a new challenging sport. “It’s much more than teaching kids how to surf, it’s about teaching these kids skills to grow as young people who contribute to society in a positive way. Board sports are a vehicle to achieve those goals”, said Chris Black, BHM’s President.

BMW StreetCarver – high speed, high thrill, high cost skateboard

leave a comment »

streetcarver bmw

At US$695, it is three to four times more expensive than the current top-of-the-range skateboards, and possibly beyond the finances of those who would most desire it, though carrying or riding the StreetCarver (SC) anywhere caused people to approach you. They either knew of the board, recognised the BMW name on the skateboard and were curious, or wanted to know what it was.

The StreetCarver has more crowd-pulling ability than Madonna.Of course, riding it is what it’s all about.Seasoned skateboarders felt at home on the board within minutes, and after the limited turning abilities of a skateboard, were amazed at how tightly the streetcarver can turn. Going down hill, you use this turning ability to wash off speed in exactly the same way as a snowboard. Read the rest of this entry »
